Abstract

This special issue of the International Journal of Plasma Environmental Science and Technology (IJPEST) provides original papers presented at the "4th Joint Symposium on Plasma and Electrostatic Technologies for Environmental Applications" held on December 10-11 2015 in Kyoto Japan. Kyoto is a historical city that was the Imperial capital for more than thousand years. The conference venue, Kyoto International Conference Center (KICC), is also an important historical site for environmental science and technology. In 1997, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Kyoto Protocol) was held at KICC.

The participants, total of 54, are from Japan, Korea, and China. The conference program includes 5 invited lectures, 20 oral presentations, and 15 poster presentations. The topics covered plasma for environmental & energy technologies, biomedical applications, electrostatics for PM control, plasma fundamental and diagnostics, etc. Because the conference has been held annually moving back and forth between Korea and Japan since 2012, many of the participants from Korean and Japan already know each other. For young participants, this familiarity was quite helpful for in-depth discussion, which is one of the main objectives of the joint conference. During the conference, the organizing committee discussed the issue of extending the conference, and suggested joining from China. At present, the related academic societies of China accept the suggestion, and have a plan to hold the next conference in China.

We would like to thank all participants of the joint conference, the authors for their high quality works, and the reviewers for their efforts for the Journal. We also thank the organizing committee, professors Akira Mizuno (Toyohashi University of Technology), Tomohiro Nozaki (Tokyo Institute of Technology), and Jung-Ho Hwang (Yonsei University). We hope that the Journal, including the special issue, provides a helpful information of the state-of-the-art on plasma science and technologies and electrostatics.
