The 1st Korean-Japan Working Group Meeting for Plasma Applications (KJWGPA) was held in Jeju Island, Korea, from 22th to 23th November 2012. This working group meeting was supported by Korea Institute of Plasma Application Science & Technology (KIPAST), Institute of Electrostatics Japan (IEJ), Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST), and Korea Research Council for Industrial Science & Technology. The meeting included 3 keynote speeches, 14 oral presentations, and 1 panel discussion, in combination with 1 poster session. The meeting was attended by 26 participants from both countries. Topics of the meeting covered various fields of plasma applications; pulsed power and its application, plasma source and plasma processing, electrostatic precipitators, plasma treatment of flue gases and dilute VOCs, etc.

The objective of the meeting is to promote cooperative relationships of young scientists and engineers in Korea and Japan. For several decades, Prof. J.D. Moon, a former chairman of KIPAST, and Dr. S.J. Kim, the present chairman of KIPAST, have associated with many members of IEJ, such as Prof. Yamamoto (Osaka Prefecture University), Prof. Oda (University of Tokyo), Prof. Mizuno (Toyohashi University of Technology). Based on their long-time relationship, numerous conferences and workshops were organized and held successfully. Among these academic meetings, The 3rd International Symposium on Nonthermal Plasma Technology for Pollution Control in 2001 (Jeju Island, Korea) provided a great opportunity to promote R&D of Korea in the field of plasma technologies for environment. In recent years, however, some of the above distinguished researchers are facing retirement. Therefore, the role of the young scientists and engineers is getting important in the society of plasma applications, which is the major motivation of the meeting.

After the scientific program, most of the young participants had a half-day trip to a park and an orange farm. In the farm, the participants took oranges from the trees, and enjoyed the fresh oranges. Although the time for the socializing was short, the participants had a great time. Some participants shared their expertise, and some others just enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Jeju Island.

I would like to express my great gratitude to Dr. Hyun-Ha Kim (AIST) for his great contribution as a Japanese coordinator. I am grateful to Prof. Mizuno for his support as a chairman of IEJ. Also, I would like to thank to Dr. W.S. Kang (KIMM) and Dr. D.H. Lee (KIMM) for their efforts in organizing and managing the whole process of the meeting.
