This special issue of the International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology (IJPEST) provides original papers presented at the "Joint Symposium on Plasma and Electrostatic Technologies for Environmental Applications" held on May 19-21 2013 in Gero Japan. Gero city is well-known as one of the top three hot spring areas in Japan. The conference venue, Gero Synergy Center ACTIVE, placed close to the hotel, so that the participants enjoyed scientific activity during the daytime and hot springs during the nighttime.
Among the total 44 participants, 24 people joined from Japan and 20 people from Korea. Ten of the total participants were Ph.D. or master students. The conference program includes 9 invited lectures, 14 oral presentations and 12 poster presentations. The presented topics covered fuel reforming, laser diagnostics and simulation of plasma, electrospray, flow control, electrostatic precipitator, solution plasma, biomedical application, and plasma-assisted combustion. Single session allowed participants to listen to all the presentations. After the conference, there was a bus trip to the historical place of Gifu castle, on the way back to Nagoya.
I would like to thank all participants in the joint symposium, the authors for their high quality works, and the reviewers for the balanced review of the manuscripts. I'm also in debt to Professor A. Mizuno (chairman of the symposium), Dr. Y. S. Song (co-organizer for Korean participants), and secretary committee members (Dr. A. Ogata and Dr. Y. Teramoto). We hope this joint conference could continue in the next year, to promote both of scientific advancement and human network between the two countries.
