Abstract
The structural changes in the tip of a polycrystalline Mo wire were observed using a long-focus microscope whilst applying a
high voltage during laser heating. Most regions of the Mo wire tip remained in a softened state below the melting point
without melting. The softened Mo repeatedly moved up and down due to electrostatic stress and surface tension. Applying
above -24 kV resulted in the formation of a Taylor cone-jet at the tip of the Mo wire. After laser heating at high voltage, the tip
of the Mo wire was sharpened. This study clarified the behavior of the Mo wire tip during electrostatic-stress-driven pull-up
growth and also demonstrated the potential for sharpening the Mo wire tip.
